A Wise Path Recovery Campus

Every Season
Leads Somewhere.

Camp Baer is a private recovery campus in the Appalachian forests of West Virginia, where licensed clinicians and the slow wisdom of the land work as one. Here, Grounded Recovery meets clinical excellence, and restoration begins at the pace of the seasons.

A Grounded Recovery Model

The Thaw. The Flow.
The Harvest.

01
The Thaw

Stabilization & Rest

Grounded Recovery begins the way a sugar maple season begins: nothing moves until the ground freezes hard. The Thaw is detox and stabilization - medical care, trauma-informed assessment, and the radical permission to rest. Sap only runs after a hard freeze, and in the same way, hardship is part of what makes renewal possible. Those first nights are clinical, and they are also where restoration quietly starts.

02
The Flow

Clinical Work & Discovery

The Flow is the long middle, where the work deepens. Individual and group therapy, somatic practice, and daily time on the land converge to help you understand the patterns that led you here and set a new course. It takes roughly forty gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup; real restoration is slow, patient refinement. Our wilderness is not a backdrop - it is an active member of the clinical team.

03
The Harvest

Transition & Return

The Harvest is transition and aftercare: a plan built for the life you are returning to, with relapse prevention, family work, and a warm handoff into the wider Wise Path Recovery system. Maple seeds fly out to start new growth, and so do you. The season does not end there - our alumni community, the Sugarbush, is named for the grove of sugar maples that is tapped year after year, and tapping does not harm a healthy tree. This one gives for generations.

The Standard We Hold

Clinical Rigor.
Human Warmth.

Deciding to begin takes courage. We meet that courage with credentialed care, quiet attention, and an unwavering regard for your dignity.

Licensed Clinical Care

Board-certified addiction medicine physicians and licensed clinicians lead every stage of care - from admission through discharge planning.

24/7 Medical Support

Nursing and medical coverage around the clock, so the first nights of your stay are held by people trained for them. Medication-assisted treatment is available and respected here.

Private & Confidential

Set on a private road in the West Virginia hills, your presence at Camp Baer remains your own.

Evidence-Based Protocols

SAMHSA-aligned standards - MAT, CBT, DBT, and trauma-informed care - woven through every stage of Grounded Recovery.

Whole-Person Approach

We care for the person, not the diagnosis, bringing mental health, physical wellness, spiritual care, and community into a single plan.

Camp Road Campus

The Story Behind the Name

A RefugeGrows Deep Roots.

Camp Baer began with a question that refuses to stay clinical: what does a person need, not only to stop using, but to turn and find the strength to build a new, healthy life?

The answer, we believe, is not found in a fluorescent corridor or a conference room with the door closed. It is found in the quiet after a hard morning. In the smell of pine after rain. In the moment a person understands, sometimes for the first time, that they are worthy of life.

Camp Baer is part of the Wise Path Recovery system, where clinical excellence and human dignity are held as the same standard. A full-spectrum, evidence-based campus for anyone ready to begin again - and a place that keeps your pace, the way the seasons do.

Camp Baer carries a man's name, and a man's belief, into every corner of this campus.

Our Philosophy

The Wilderness
Is the Therapist.

Research in ecotherapy and nature-based healing is unambiguous: the natural world regulates the nervous system in ways that pharmaceuticals alone cannot replicate. The rhythm of the forest, its silence, its scale, its indifference to your diagnosis, resets the body's capacity for calm.

At Camp Baer, the curriculum is designed in partnership with the land. Morning walks are therapeutic. The changing light through the canopy is intentional. The sound of the creek below the ridge is not background; it is treatment.

We call this Grounded Recovery, a model that places the body in nature as a clinical intervention, not an amenity. The mountains have been healing people long before we named it a methodology.

In Honor of Don Baer

The Reason
Behind the Name.

Don Baer, in whose honor Camp Baer is named

Don Baer

The Namesake of Camp Baer

Camp Baer is named in honor of Dr. Don Baer, a serial entrepreneur, recovery advocate, and trusted professional referral partner with a PhD in Psychology specializing in Counseling. For more than 30 years, Don has combined his clinical training, business experience, and personal recovery journey to help countless individuals and families find hope and build lasting lives in recovery.

But the name Camp Baer represents far more than Don's professional accomplishments. It honors a friendship, a mentorship, and a relationship that helped shape the very foundation of Ascension Recovery Services, Wise Path Recovery Services, and Doug Leech as a professional in the field.

More than 15 years ago, Don learned that Doug Leech, still early in his own recovery, was opening a sober living home in downtown Morgantown. That home would eventually become West Virginia Sober Living, a statewide nonprofit organization. Don reached out on his own, not because he had anything to gain, but because he saw someone who had found recovery and wanted to use that experience to make a difference for others.

From that moment forward, Don began offering his time, guidance, encouragement, and unwavering support. He became Doug's mentor, trusted advisor, and best friend, walking beside him as the work grew from a single recovery house into the national system of quality SUD care through Doug's various entities.

Don has been present through some of the most difficult and defining moments of Doug's personal and professional journey. Not a day goes by that he does not check in, even if it is simply to send an encouraging message to begin the morning, most often: "It's a good day to have a good day!"

Naming this campus Camp Baer is Doug's small way of honoring the man who believed in him at the beginning, stood beside him through every challenge, and helped him become the person and leader he is today.

Don's philosophy is woven into the mission and spirit of Camp Baer.

Where there is breath, there is hope.

Camp Baer exists to carry that hope forward, giving every person who enters its doors the opportunity to recover, rebuild, and discover that today truly can be a good day to have a good day.

The Grounds

Where Restoration
Finds Its Ground.

Warm wood, soft light, and the quiet sound of the creek below the ridge. Camp Baer was built to feel like a long exhale - sugar maples on the slope, a porch made for silence, and rooms where the nervous system can finally set something down.
